The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is pleased to announce that Clinton, Tennessee, has been chosen as the site of the 2009 May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture. Walter Dean Myers, renowned author of outstanding fiction, poetry and nonfiction for children and young adults, will deliver the lecture, which will be hosted by the Langston Hughes Library of the Children’s Defense Fund Haley Farm with the support of the University of Tennessee School of Information Sciences, the University of Tennessee’s Center for Children’s and Young Adult Literature, the Knox County Public Library, and the Clinton Public Library.
The lecture will be held at the Children’s Defense Fund Haley Farm on Saturday, April 18, 2009. CDF Haley Farm will be open to Arbuthnot guests at 11:00 a.m. Lecture attendance is free of charge, but tickets must be reserved ahead of time. You may register online for this event by clicking on the link above labeled "Register Now" or by faxing your request to the attention of Ericka Wright Dobson at 865-457-6464. Your faxed request should include a name, mailing address and telephone number for each ticket requested.
Please note: No food may be brought onto the grounds of CDF Haley Farm. There will be bag lunches (turkey or vegetarian) available for purchase from 11:00 a.m. to noon at a cost of $7.50 per person.

The Langston Hughes Library of the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF), a national nonprofit organization that advocates for the welfare of all children, is a special library housed in a traditional cantilever barn (building) that was redesigned by noted architect Maya Lin. The Library has established a reputation for offering opportunities to gather for discussions and workshops on literature and literacy and their importance to society. It will celebrate its tenth anniversary in the spring of 2009. The Library has a collection that specializes in African American children's literature and African American experiences. The Haley Farm and Langston Hughes Library art collection includes original artwork by Bryan Collier, Tom Feelings, Tyrone Geter and Jacob Lawrence.
